The Region II Head Start Association's 2023 Conference, held in the beautiful Puerto Rico, was a remarkable event that brought together nearly 800 attendees from the Head Start community. This annual gathering is a vital platform for professionals to share knowledge, celebrate achievements, and explore innovative strategies in early childhood education. The 2023 conference was no exception and proved to be an exceptional experience for all involved.

The 2023 Region II Head Start Awards Ceremony

One of the standout events at this year's conference was the 2023 Region II Head Start Awards Ceremony. This prestigious event celebrated the outstanding contributions of individuals and organizations within the Head Start community. It recognized those who have gone above and beyond to make a positive impact on the lives of young children and families. The award recipients were acknowledged for their dedication, innovation, and commitment to the Head Start program.

Head Start Classroom of the Future

In keeping with the theme of innovation, the conference featured an interactive exhibit presented by Camera Mundi, Lakeshore Learning Materials and Teaching Strategies called the "Head Start Classroom of the Future." Attendees had the opportunity to explore cutting-edge educational tools and techniques, fostering a dynamic learning environment for young children. This exhibit provided a glimpse into the exciting possibilities for the future of Head Start programs, emphasizing technology and modern teaching methods. The exhibit was accompanied by instructional sessions - where attendees had the opportunity to learn from experts and participate in hands-on activities.

Celebration of the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

The conference also took the time to honor the unique cultural and educational contributions of two significant regions: the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Tuesday night saw a celebration dedicated to the US Virgin Islands and the following evening, attendees gathered to celebrate Puerto Rico - complete with the Mayor's 40-piece band. We also hosted a wide variety of Head Start parents and provided an opportunity for Head Start parents to sell their creations (everything was sold out in under an hour!!).

Educational Sessions and Networking

The 2023 conference featured 115 educational sessions, covering a wide array of topics related to early childhood education, leadership, and program management. With the participation of 100 speakers, attendees had ample opportunities to learn, share, and network. These sessions facilitated the exchange of ideas and best practices, enriching the knowledge and expertise of all involved.

Exhibitors and Sponsors

The conference showcased the latest products and services in early childhood education through 31 exhibitors. Attendees had the chance to explore new resources and innovative solutions to enhance their programs. The generous support of 13 sponsors made this event possible, ensuring that it remained a high-quality and informative gathering.

Certification Opportunities

A noteworthy feature of this year's conference was the opportunity for attendees to gain their playground safety inspector certification and food safety manager certification. These certifications are crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of children in Head Start programs, and the availability of these courses was a significant benefit for conference participants.

Scavenger Hunt and Prizes

In a fun and engaging twist, the conference introduced its first-ever scavenger hunt. Attendees had the chance to compete for over $11,000 in prizes contributed by vendors. Participants submitted over 650 photos and claimed an astounding 71,105 points in total. The competition was fierce, and 172 prizes were awarded to the lucky winners, making for a thrilling and memorable experience.

United As One

Although separated by the Ocean, we are indeed one Head Start family and community. This year, we had the unique opportunity to showcase our best individual coloring skills. To the surprise of many attendees, our individual efforts would soon feed into a collective work of art! At the closing session we unveiled a 12 foot by 9 foot masterpiece!
